Jose Luis Chilavert was a professional footballer who played as a goalkeeper. He is considered to be one of the best goalkeepers in history. He played for several clubs during his career, including Paraguay, Velez Sarsfield, and Real Zaragoza. Chilavert began his career with Paraguayan club Sportivo Luqueño. After moving to Guarni in 1984, and helped them win the Paraguayan Primera Division in his only season with the club. Chilavert then moved to San Lorenzo de Almagro in Argentina, spending four seasons with club. In 1988, Chilavert transferred to Spanish club Real Zaragoza. He returned to Argentina with Velez Sarsfield in 1991. He helped the club win several titles, including for Premiera Division titles and the Copa Libertadores in 1994. Chilavert also won the Intercontinental Cup with Velez Sarsfield that same year.

In 2000, Chilavert secured a transfer to Strasbourg in France. He only spent two seasons with the club winning the Coupe de France in 2001. He made his final move to Penarol before eventually retiring from football in 2004. He made a total of 115 appearances for the Paraguayan national team, and scored 8 goals, a feat that is rare in the world of football.
