There are many great defenders in the world of football. But, there is one player who stands above the rest: Nemanja Vidic. This man was a force to be reckoned with on the pitch, and was a mainstay in Manchester United's and Serbia's defense for years. His combination of strength, speed and intelligence make him the perfect defender. He is considered by many to be the best defender in the world, and for good reason!

Vidic's Career

Nemanja Vidic was a Serbian former professional footballer who played as a centre back. He spent the majority of his career with Manchester United, where he won numerous trophies, including five Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League. He also captained both club and country on many occasions.

Vidic's club career began at Red Star Belgrade, where he played four seasons before moving to Spartak Moscow in 2004. He won the Russian Premier League title in his only season with the club and was voted into the league's Team of the Year. In 2006, Vidic signed with English club Manchester United for £30 million, a then-record fee for a Serbian player.

Vidic quickly established himself as one of the best defenders in the world, winning multiple Premier League Player of the Season awards. At United, Vidic quickly established himself as the first-choice centre-back alongside Rio Ferdinand, helping the club win five Premier League titles and a Champions League title. He was named captain of United in 2010 and held that role until his departure from the club in 2014. Vidic is widely considered to be one of the best defenders of his generation and one of the best players to ever play for Manchester United.

After leaving Manchester United, Vidic spent two seasons with the Italian club Inter Milan. He announced his retirement from professional football in January 2016.

Vidic made his senior debut for the Serbia national team in 2002 and went on to make 36 appearances for his country. He captained the side on many occasions and was a key member of the team that reached the 2006 FIFA World Cup.

He also played an important role in Serbia's successful qualifying campaign for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, where they reached the knockout stage of the tournament.

Vidic's playing style

There are many factors that made Nemanja Vidic one of the best defenders in the world. His physicality, aerial ability, strength, and leadership skills were all top-notch. In addition, his determination on the pitch was second to none. He was always willing to put his body on the line to make a tackle or block a shot. These qualities made him a nightmare for opposing strikers and helped him lead Manchester United to numerous titles.

Vidic was compared to that of Liverpool's Sami Hyypia by then-Inter Milan coach José Mourinho, who said, "Vidic is the best central defender in the world. He's strong, he's quick, he anticipates well and reads the game perfectly."

Praise also came from Vidic's former teammate Rio Ferdinand, who said: "He was probably one of my favourite ever partners. I enjoyed playing with him so much because we had a great understanding—on the pitch and off it."

In his prime, Vidic was known for his aerial ability, strength and tough-tackling style; former Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar described him as "the boss" of United's defence.

Vidic was known for his no-nonsense approach to defending and was nicknamed "The Warrior" due to his aggressive style of play. He was named in both the FIFPro World XI and the UEFA Team of the Year on multiple occasions and was voted Manchester United's Player of the Year in 2008/09.

Vidic's legacy will be remembered for his tough-tackling, no-nonsense approach to defending. He was a true warrior on the pitch and will go down as one of the best players to ever play for Manchester United.
