Jairzinho was one of the most complete footballers to ever play the game. He was fast, strong, and could score goals from anywhere on the pitch. Who is Jairzinho and what was his career like?

Jairzinho was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1944. He began his career playing for local club Bonsucesso before moving to Botafogo in 1961. He spent thirteen years at Botafogo, winning the Campeonato Carioca (Rio state championship) three times. Jairzinho made over 400 appearences with the club scoring 186 goals. In 1974, he moved to European giants Marseille. However, he only spent one season in Italy before returning to Brazil to join Cruzeiro Jairzinho spent the remaining of his career playing for different clubs across Brazil before eventually returning to Botafogo and returning in 1982.

Jairzinho made his debut for Brazil in 1966 and would go on to appear in three World Cups. He was a member of the legendary 1970 World Cup winning team, and made a record by scoring in every single game Brazil played in that World Cup. He ended the second highest scorer in that tournament scoring 7 goals, three behind top scorer Gerd Muller. He also scored two goals in the 1974 World Cup, becoming the only player to ever score in every round of a World Cup tournament. Overall, he scored 33 goals in 81 appearances for Brazil.

After retiring, Jairzinho went into management, but he was never able to replicate his success as a player.
